5 years.I feel like it typically take 5 years of living in a home to want to give it some updates, add some new furniture pieces or even complete a substantial renovation. There are a few key elements when renovating or planning a new build that can instantly make a home feel high end. Some of these features are obviously easier to complete on a new build, but all are attainable depending on how dirty you want to get!

1. Window Sills

Adding a sill to your window casing is a simple detail and unfortunately it’s often the first to go when cutting corners. When a window only has window casings but no sill to die into it just looks like a small and insignificant.

2. Casing Around Door Openings
Much like the window sill, ensuring that your door openings are framed out with a substantial door casing instantly elevates the entire room. Casing is a relatively easy and simple element to upgrade and even add after the fact.  The most important element when adding a casing is implementing a back band. This allows your baseboard and quarter round or door stop detail to hit the casing flush, rather than protruding past the casing edge.

3. Mix and match cabinet pulls and knobs
Updating and mixing cabinet hardware is usually pretty easy to do without much effort as well, and an even be done by the homeowner. As long as the spacing is the same as the original holes you are good to go! I typically use knobs for cabinets, small pulls for drawers, and larger pulls for pantry or pot doors. Mixing them up instantly makes a space feel more thoughtful and intentional.

4. Cabinet end gables
I’m of the firm belief that the exposed end gables of all millwork (kitchens, islands, built-in bookshelves…) should be just as thoughtfully built and designed as the rest of the cabinetry. This attention to detail is truly what sets one space apart from the next. Adding panel details and design elements such as mirrors will drastically elevate the look of your millwork.

5. Solid core interior doors
Solid core doors are not only better for sound separation but they are 100% wood and can be sanded, planed, filled, and painted if they become damaged. They give a substantial feel and are very strong. The first thing I notice when I visit someones home is their doors, and nothing looks or feels better than a solid wood door.
